Dead gray whale spotted off Camano Island

CAMANO ISLAND — A dead gray whale has been spotted just northwest of Washington's Camano Island.

CAMANO ISLAND — A dead gray whale has been spotted just northwest of Washington's Camano Island.

Susan Berta of the Whidbey Island-based Orca Network says the whale, estimated at 30 tons, was first seen Sunday night floating near Camano Island State Park.

She says her group has received permission from the Navy to pull the whale onto a restricted beach at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island today night at high tide. Once on the beach, Berta says investigators will try to determine what killed the animal.

Gray whales often visit the Puget Sound area this time of year on their migration north from Mexico to the Bering Sea. Berta says it's common for two or three dead whales to be spotted each year.
