Wash. lawmakers delay family leave program

The Legislature has delayed for three years a new program giving parents five weeks of partially paid time off for a new child.

OLYMPIA, Wash. —

The Legislature has delayed for three years a new program giving parents five weeks of partially paid time off for a new child.

The House passed the measure on a 61-34 vote Sunday, after the Senate passed it early Sunday morning. It now goes to Gov. Chris Gregoire for final approval.

The paid family leave program was supposed to being paying benefits up to $250 a week starting in October 2009, but lawmakers have never approved a revenue source.

Under the bill approved Sunday, family leave would be delayed three years, until October 2012.

The family leave bill is Senate Bill 6158.
