The Bagmonster: An Earth Day mascot?

The Bagmonster is an anti-hero invented by supporters of a 20-cent fee for disposable bags, which voters will consider in August. Several of them appeared around Seattle on Wednesday, Earth Day, after appearances last year at the Seattle City Council chambers and in Olympia. The monster is made of 500 plastic bags, the number an American typically uses in a year.

"He was asking Seattleites to stand with him so that we can keep the world exactly the same," said Seth Ballhorn, a spokesman for the monster. "He's not from Seattle, he's an out-of-state lobbyist, but he likes to spend time under your sink and in the Puget Sound."

The Bagmonster group has a Web site, Seattlebagmonster.com, and a Facebook page. The group is not affiliated formally with the Seattle Green Bag Campaign. The Bagmonster is expected to make appearances throughout the summer at farmers markets and other events, Ballhorn said.
