Thousands could lose state-subsidized health care

Thousands of people could be kicked off the state-subsidized Basic Health Plan under a bill approved by the state House.

OLYMPIA — Thousands of people could be kicked off the state-subsidized Basic Health Plan under a bill approved by the state House.

It's one of the changes needed to bridge a $9 billion state budget shortfall.

The bill debated Monday would kick off thousands of people who are getting separate medical benefits from the Department of Social and Health Services.

Basic Health officials would also get authority to remove more people, based on their income, their ability to get other health coverage, and how long they've been on Basic Health.

The bill cleared the House on an 89-9 vote, and now goes to the Senate. The state budget will probably seek about $250 million in savings from the Basic Health Plan.
