Seattle's new light rail to open July 18

Seattle's new light rail line is scheduled to open July 18, about two weeks later than initially planned.

SEATTLE —

Seattle's new light rail line is scheduled to open July 18, about two weeks later than initially planned.

Mayor Greg Nickels said Monday the date was chosen to ease the load on police and firefighters dealing with other weekend events, not because of construction or other delays. It had been tentatively set in federal grant documents for July 3.

The 14-mile line runs from a tunnel in downtown Seattle to a station less than two miles from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. From there, free shuttle buses will take passengers to the airport terminal until the airport station opens in December.

The $2.4 billion first phase of the project opening in July will be followed by a $1.9 billion extension through tunnels to the University District, scheduled to open in 2016.
