Washington bill names pets 'personal effects'

State lawmakers have approved legislation that would include pets as "personal effects" when a court issues a domestic violence protective order.

OLYMPIA, Wash. —

State lawmakers have approved legislation that would include pets as "personal effects" when a court issues a domestic violence protective order.

The new law would let victims take their pets when they remove personal effects to leave abusive situations.

The bill, sponsored by Rep. Brendan Williams of Olympia, has passed both chambers. The Olympian reports it's back in the House to agree with Senate amendments.
