New light rail train, car collide in Seattle

A light rail train and a car collided about 5:05 p.m. Wednesday at Martin Luther King Jr. Way South and South Dawson Street. It is the first collision between a light rail train and a car since Sound Transit began testing light rail trains in preparation for the start of service this summer.

A light rail train and a car collided about 5:05 p.m. Wednesday at Martin Luther King Jr. Way South and South Dawson Street. It is the first collision between a light rail train and a car since Sound Transit began testing light rail trains in preparation for the start of service this summer.

Sound Transit spokesman Geoff Patrick said the light rail train and the vehicle were both headed north. The car made an illegal left turn into the path of the train at the intersection, which is controlled by a signal, Patrick said.

The driver of the car, a female, complained of some pain and was taken to Harborview Medical center to be examined, he said. A passenger in the car was not injured.

There were no passengers on the train, and the train operator was not injured, Patrick said.
