Boy, girl killed by train apparently didn't hear it

The boy and girl killed by an Amtrak train near Woodland apparently didn't hear it coming behind them because of a passing freight on parallel tracks.

WOODLAND, Wash. — The boy and girl killed by an Amtrak train near Woodland apparently didn't hear it coming behind them because of a passing freight on parallel tracks.

The Cowlitz County sheriff's office says the teens did not respond to the Amtrak's whistle. The northbound train was traveling about 75 miles per hour and could not stop in time.

The two were struck about 7:10 p.m. Tuesday about a quarter-mile from Woodland.

The track, owned by Burlington Northern Santa Fe, was closed about four hours. About 50 trains a day use the mainline between Portland and Seattle.
