Fort Lewis soldier dead after accidental shooting

A Fort Lewis soldier was killed when he was accidentally shot in the head by his wife as he was teaching her how to handle a handgun.

OLYMPIA, Wash. —

A Fort Lewis soldier was killed when he was accidentally shot in the head by his wife as he was teaching her how to handle a handgun.

The Thurston County coroner's office identifies the dead man as 25-year-old Eric J. Autio.

Sheriff's Lt. Chris Mealy says deputies were called to the couple's Olympia home about 1:30 a.m. Sunday. He says Autio and his wife, also 25, had been out to dinner with friends and family and when they got home, Autio decided to teach his wife how to handle the semiautomatic handgun, which was his personal property.

The gun discharged as she was handling the weapon.

Mealy tells The Olympian that Autio was scheduled for deployment soon.

Autio's wife is not facing charges, but an investigation is continuing.

Why was the handgun loaded in the first place? For those firearms owners, never have a handgun loaded inside a home.  Posted on April 12, 2009 at 11:31 PM by noose. Jump to comment
