PORT ORCHARD — A 17-year-old boy from Kitsap County could spend the rest of his life in prison if convicted of aggravated first-degree murder in the stabbing death of his elderly neighbor during a robbery.
Seventeen-year-old Daniel James Mustard was scheduled to be arraigned in Superior Court this afternoon, after the prosecutor's office confirmed the charging decision.
Detectives say Mustard stabbed 87-year-old Ruby Andrews at her home Sunday in the small community of Colchester. He then allegedly stole the woman's white Cadillac, picked up two of his friends and showed them cellphone pictures of her lying in a pool of blood in her bathroom.
One of the friends told detectives that Mustard said the woman began to struggle and he cut her, and after that he stabbed her more and slit her throat.
Mustard could not face the death penalty because he's under 18. The only other possible punishment for aggravated first-degree murder is life in prison without parole.
