The U.S. Department of Energy's Hanford office has received more than $1.5 billion in federal economic stimulus money to start more cleanup work at the nuclear reservation.
The U.S. Department of Energy's Hanford office has received more than $1.5 billion in federal economic stimulus money to start more cleanup work at the nuclear reservation.
Department spokesman Geoff Tyree says the money received Tuesday will allow Hanford to start some new projects and permit contractors to start hiring.
Eventually, the Tri-City Herald reports, Hanford is expected to receive nearly $2 billion in stimulus money, which will help keep or create about 4,000 jobs.
The 586-square-mile Hanford reservation produced plutonium in World War II and throughout the Cold War for nuclear weapons. It is the nation's most contaminated nuclear site.
