Avalanche danger slows travel over Snoqualmie Pass

The avalanche danger at Snoqualmie Pass will make for slow going on Interstate 90 again Monday.

The avalanche danger at Snoqualmie Pass will make for slow going on Interstate 90 again today. State road crews plan to stop westbound traffic near the summit for about three hours, starting at 1 p.m., for avalanche control work. Eastbound traffic won't be affected.

On Sunday traffic was backed up for 18 miles because of the danger of slides about a mile west of the summit. Two of the three westbound lanes were closed for more than five hours.

Mike Westbay, a state Transportation Department spokesman, says the snowpack is unstable because of the first major warming of the spring. The high Sunday was 50 degrees, and the forecast for today is for a high of 50 to 60.
