Ivar's says no July 4th fireworks this year

After 44 years, Ivar's Seafood Restaurants will not sponsor a July 4 fireworks show this summer. The restaurant chain announced Friday that it is discontinuing the pyrotechnic show this year.

SEATTLE — After 44 years, Ivar's Seafood Restaurants will not sponsor a July 4 fireworks show this summer. The restaurant chain announced Friday that it is discontinuing the pyrotechnic show over Elliott Bay this year.

Ivar's President Bob Donegan says there are so many fireworks displays in the region, that the restaurant was prompted to abandon the fireworks show and focus on other community work. Donegan says a partnership with Northwest Harvest, a hunger relief agency, will be expanded.

The annual fireworks display — called the "4th of Jul-Ivar's" — started in 1964 when the restaurant's founder Ivar Haglund sponsored the show after the city's show was almost canceled.
