Alaska volcano is fairly quiet, for now

The Mount Redoubt volcano has been fairly quiet. Seismologists at the Alaska Volcano Observatory in Anchorage say the volcano continues to spew steam and ash, but is not producing the big ash clouds that were typical over the weekend.

ANCHORAGE — The Mount Redoubt volcano has been fairly quiet.

Seismologists at the Alaska Volcano Observatory in Anchorage say the volcano continues to spew steam and ash, but is not producing the big ash clouds that were typical over the weekend.

Plans also continue to be developed on what to do about the more than 6 million gallons of crude stored in two tanks at the Drift River Terminal, a Chevron-operated facility close to the volcano 100 miles southwest of Anchorage.

The goal is to draw down oil stored in the tanks. It appears that one plan to replace the oil with water is not feasible.

Crews also continue to clean up mud and debris from mudflows that have flowed down the volcano's flanks during eruptions.
