Neighbors lend a hand to move Tweedy & Popp

Tweedy & Popp Ace Hardware in Wallingford is moving across North 45th Street to Wallingford Center.

One of Seattle's oldest hardware stores moved hundreds of items in the rain and cold Saturday using a "bucket brigade" of volunteers attired in everything from Gore-Tex and galoshes to high heels and faux fur.

Tweedy & Popp Ace Hardware in Wallingford, which opened in 1920, is moving across North 45th Street to Wallingford Center. Occupancy permits for the new site are expected midweek.

Mike Mikkelsen, general manager and partner in the business, says the "Wallingford neighborhood is cohesive — like a small town," and about a hundred volunteers lent a hand Saturday to relocate goods across the busy arterial. Mikkelsen says the store has around 9,000 different items, not counting nails, washers and bolts. It's also the neighborhood's oldest business and expects to celebrate its centennial in 2020, having signed a 15-year lease at its new location.
