Harmit Singh Malik and Toshiyasu Taniguchiare are among 50 scientists nationwide chosen by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute of Chevy Chase, Md., in its Early Career Scientist competition.
The appointments, which also cover salaries and additional money for critical equipment and other expenses, free scientists from constant searches for grants and to focus on their research interests.
Malik, 36, is an evolutionary biologist who uses biochemistry and genomics to study how genes fight for evolutionary dominance. Taniguchi, 43, is a physician and a cancer researcher who is studying how the body's DNA-repair process interferes with a drug's effect on cancer cells.
