Wash. Legislature begins final budget debate

The state Senate has begun final debate on the state's next two-year operating budget.

Associated Press Writer

OLYMPIA, Wash. —

The state Senate has begun final debate on the state's next two-year operating budget.

The Senate was expected to approve the budget Saturday night, with just one full day left on the calendar for the 2009 Legislature. The state House already approved the budget, on Friday night.

This year's state budget spends about $35 billion, and bridges a $9 billion deficit between tax income and projected spending.

More than half of the deficit fix is through federal money and other one-time fixes. The rest, about $4 billion, is made up by trimming expected spending through mid-2011. It doesn't count on any general tax increases.
