Wilderness bill designates flood trail

A wilderness bill approved by Congress on Wednesday also designates the Ice Age Floods National Geologic Trail.

WASHINGTON —

A wilderness bill approved by Congress on Wednesday also designates the Ice Age Floods National Geologic Trail.

The floods inundated parts of the Northwest, carving out much of the landscape of present-day Idaho, Washington and Oregon. The trail will include a network of marked touring routes accessible by car, beginning in Missoula, Mont., and ending at the mouth of the Columbia River in Washington and Oregon.

Sean Smith of the nonprofit National Parks Conservation Association says it's an important step toward increasing public understanding of the Northwest's natural history.
