Snohomish County, union reach labor deal

A tentative agreement between Snohomish County and its largest labor union for furlough days and some shortened work weeks may avert employee layoffs in 2009.

County Executive Aaron Reardon Monday announced an agreement with the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), which represents about 1,750 of the county's 2,500 employees.

Reardon said the furloughs, coupled with a proposed hiring freeze, should eliminate the need to cut an additional $6.75 million from the budget.

Snohomish County leaders last week said sales-tax revenue and real-estate excise-tax receipts had fallen even more than projected in November, when the County Council cut 160 positions to close a $21 million budget shortfall.
