Sandhill cranes make a stop in Othello

Seattle Times photographer

Every year, thousands of migrating sandhill cranes stop off in Eastern Washington's Othello area for four to six weeks, foraging for food to fuel their flight north to breeding grounds in Alaska.

They're back again — and that's enough reason for the Greater Othello Chamber of Commerce and other sponsors to host the annual Othello Sandhill Crane Festival, a three-day event that draws hundreds of spectators.

Now in its 12th year, the festival ends today with a number of scheduled bird-watching field trips. But you can probably spot the birds on your own. Othello residents say the statuesque wading birds are known to flock around local cornfields and the Columbia National Wildlife Refuge.

To get to Othello, in Adams County, follow Interstate 90 east to Vantage, then take Highway 26 to Othello. Or, take I-90 to Moses Lake and then head south on Highway 17 to Othello.
