Seattle man charged with hate crime

Abdiazzizi Idris, who prosecutors say harassed a man on a bus and called him a gay epithet, has been charged under the state's hate-crime law. According to Seattle police, Idris was on a Metro bus in Seattle on March 10 when he slapped another man in the back of the head and called him by an epithet.

The man got off the bus at Rainier Avenue South and South Henderson and Idris followed him, grabbed him by the neck and demanded his cellphone and $10, charging papers filed in King County Superior Court last week said. A man working at a nearby grocery store saw the altercation, called the man under attack over and called 911 to report the incident.

Idris was booked into King County Jail, and prosecutors are requesting $50,000 bail. Court documents say he has pending charges for auto theft and a prior conviction for theft.
