Demand for chickens grows in central Wash.
WENATCHEE — Farm supply stores in north-central Washington say they're seeing more interest in vegetable seeds and brood animals, particularly chicks.
WENATCHEE — Farm supply stores in north-central Washington say they're seeing more interest in vegetable seeds and brood animals, particularly chicks.
Ken Howe is manager at the Big R ranch supply store in East Wenatchee. He says rural homeowners who want to cut down on their food bills are buying chicks as fast as they come in to the store.
The store has been working with three chick nurseries that are struggling to meet demand nationwide.
Al Sanow, business manager for Ag Supply Co, said the company's five stores have been selling a lot of seeds and had a lot of people sign up for gardening classes.
He anticipates a big year because of the economy.
