Heritage University's leader will step down

Sister Kathleen Ross, the first and only president of private Heritage University, announced Friday she will step down as soon as a successor is found. Ross has been president for more than a quarter-century. The nondenominational Heritage College, as it was first known, was created in 1981.

Ross, a Roman Catholic nun, has been seen as an inspirational leader. In 1997 she won the MacArthur Foundation genius grant, then gave the money to students through scholarships and other programs. She plans to head the university's new national institute, which is dedicated to improving the success of first-generation college students.
