Senate passes bill reducing unemployment tax rate

Washington businesses could get a break in how much they have to pay into the state's unemployment insurance fund.

Associated Press Writer

OLYMPIA, Wash. —

Washington businesses could get a break in how much they have to pay into the state's unemployment insurance fund.

The Senate passed a bill Wednesday night reducing the unemployment tax rate.

Washington has one of the most cash-filed unemployment trusts in the country. Business leaders say that's because they've paid more than their share into it for too long.

The measure passed 38-11 with bipartisan support, but some Democrats don't like some of the provisions. In particular, they don't like the bill's increased regulation over how benefits are given out.

The measure now goes to the House.
