Grants total $9 million to help Seattle schools

Three charitable foundations are giving $9 million in grants to Seattle Public Schools to help improve student achievement and support teachers.

SEATTLE —

Three charitable foundations are giving $9 million in grants to Seattle Public Schools to help improve student achievement and support teachers.

The grants announced Tuesday include more than $7 million from the Gates Foundation, more than $1 million from the Broad Foundation, about $300,000 from the Boeing Company and a quarter of a million dollars from the Stuart Foundation.

The money will pay for improving the district's data collection system. It will help implement a new districtwide achievement testing program. It will expand college-ready coursework for students. And it will pay for more teacher training.
