Judge denies Brown execution stay bid

Cal Coburn Brown, who is scheduled to die by lethal injection early Friday, apologized for murdering a 22-year-old woman 18 years ago, saying there hasn't been "one day since that time that I haven't felt horrible about what I did."
Brown spoke by speakerphone to the state clemency board Thursday afternoon, before his attorney asked the board to grant Brown a reprieve until a May court hearing. His attorney asked that if a reprieve is not granted, then Brown should receive clemency because of his mental illness.
Brown, 50, is set to be executed at 12:01 a.m. Friday at the Washington State Penitentiary in Walla Walla. He was convicted of 1991 rape and murder of Holly Washa near Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.
