Wash. House OKs ban on chemical in baby bottles
The House has approved a measure that would ban a controversial chemical from baby bottles, sippy cups and sports water bottles.
The House has approved a measure that would ban a controversial chemical from baby bottles, sippy cups and sports water bottles.
The measure to ban bisphenol A was passed on a 76-21 vote Thursday and now heads to the Senate.
The federal government says bisphenol A is safe in low doses, but supporters of the ban say even small doses may harm children.
The proposed ban would begin July 1, 2010. It prohibits the chemical in food and drink containers made for children 3 and under, as well as reusable drink bottles, such as Nalgene bottles.
The measure directs the Department of Ecology to find alternatives to bisphenol A by July 2012 for food and drink containers that aren't already banned.
