Gregoire signs $340 million highway stimulus plan

Gov. Chris Gregoire has given final approval to a plan for spending $340 million of highway stimulus money.

Associated Press Writer

OLYMPIA, Wash. —

Gov. Chris Gregoire has given final approval to a plan for spending $340 million of highway stimulus money.

The Legislature moved quicker than usual in approving 35 projects for the federal money. And Gregoire quickly signed it into law Thursday afternoon.

The projects are littered across the state. There's a priority on speeding up gas-tax projects that have been delayed. Lawmakers also want to improve safety and make road repairs.

Seattle officials wanted about $75 million for road projects in the city. But the state says there's other pots of stimulus money for local projects.

The state has about four months to spend the first half of the highway stimulus, and a year to spend the rest.
