Bellingham, Wash. newspaper cuts staff, pay

The Bellingham Herald is laying off 10 employees and cutting salaries for most of its remaining workers.

BELLINGHAM, Wash. —

The Bellingham Herald is laying off 10 employees and cutting salaries for most of its remaining workers.

Publisher Glen Nardi says the cost-cutting moves are a response to the troubled economy.

The newspaper announced Monday that it's cutting the equivalent of eight full-time positions, which translates to 10 staffers. Remaining workers' salaries will be trimmed by either 2.5 percent or 5 percent, depending on the employee's current pay.

The Herald also is planning to print its newspaper at the Skagit Valley Herald, and is negotiating the sale of its building. The Herald plans to lease back its space if the building is sold.

The Herald is owned by Sacramento, Calif.-based McClatchy Co.
