Bill to ban BPA in baby bottles clears hurdles

A bill that would ban the chemical bisphenol A (BIS'-phen-ol) from baby bottles and other food and drink containers for children three and younger has cleared initial hurdles in the Washington Legislature.

SEATTLE —

A bill that would ban the chemical bisphenol A (BIS'-phen-ol) from baby bottles and other food and drink containers for children three and younger has cleared initial hurdles in the Washington Legislature.

The House appropriations committee on Wednesday approved the bill , which now awaits a vote in the full House.

A similar Senate bill is also waiting full Senate action.

The federal government says the chemical, also known as BPA, is safe in low doses but, lawmakers want to limit children's exposure. Some scientists worry that BPA could be harmful because it mimics the effects of the hormone estrogen.

The chemical industry and businesses oppose the ban and say the chemical is safe.

If the bill passes, Washington would be the first state to restrict BPA in certain products.
