Not enough sweet talk: Ore. state berry squished
SALEM, Ore. — In a jam over designating a state berry, Oregon lawmakers decided to chuck the whole idea.
SALEM, Ore. — In a jam over designating a state berry, Oregon lawmakers decided to chuck the whole idea.
The idea was to honor the marionberry, a sweetie of a blackberry variety bred at Oregon State.
The finicky berries like the moist springs and cool summer nights of their namesake Marion County, and 90 percent of the world crop, or 23 million pounds, are grown there each year.
Sponsors say they got assent from other berry interests — rasp, blue and straw. But a grower of another blackberry variety objected.
So, the Oregon Raspberry and Blackberry Commission backed off, The Oregonian newspaper reported. And Rep. Vicki Berger yanked her resolution.
Given stickier economic issues to deal with, she says, she's "not going to bat over internal disputes in the berry community."
