Orca photo ID wins science prize

The founder of the Center for Whale Research in Friday Harbor, Ken Balcomb, has been given the first Salish Sea Science Prize for pioneering the use of photo identification of killer whales.

The $2,000 prize is awarded by the SeaDoc Society, which, according to its Web site, "conducts and sponsors scientific research in the inland waters of the Pacific Northwest."

Balcomb produces the annual census of Puget Sound orcas.
