Port of Seattle orders furloughs for nonunion workers

To avoid layoffs, Port of Seattle CEO Tay Yoshitani has ordered nonunion employees to take two weeks off without pay this year.

To avoid layoffs, Port of Seattle CEO Tay Yoshitani has ordered nonunion employees to take two weeks off without pay this year.

In a message to Port employees Wednesday, Yoshitani said he has asked union employees to come up with a plan to attain similar savings. The Port faces a $9 million budget shortfall this year.

The two-week furloughs for nonunion workers will save almost $3 million. The Port has 1,700 employees; roughly half are nonunion.

The Port also will cut its travel budget by 50 percent and freeze hiring for new positions.

Yoshitani said he opted for furloughs because they can quickly achieve savings, provide flexibility for employees and are fair "across the board."

Port spokeswoman Charla Skaggs said the furloughs should avert layoffs "for now, but nobody knows what the future holds."
