Dog-kennel owners face cruelty charges

Animal-cruelty charges were filed Thursday against the owners of a Mount Vernon kennel where about 450 dogs were seized last week.

Richard and Marjorie Sundberg of Mount Vernon were charged with four counts of second-degree animal cruelty in Skagit County District Court, Skagit County, said Prosecutor Richard Weyrich.

Officials said dogs were found at the Mountain View Road kennel in deplorable conditions, covered with urine and feces, and lacking proper food and water.

Investigators in Snohomish County also are collecting evidence for a possible animal-cruelty case related to the Mount Vernon kennel. Snohomish County sheriff's deputies and animal-control officers on Jan. 16 rescued some 160 dogs from a home near Gold Bar.
