Seattle tunnel opponents take Initiative 99
Opponents of the proposal to replace Seattle's Alaskan Way Viaduct with a tunnel have until July 20 to collect 18,000 signatures on an initiative to the city council for a possible public vote.
Opponents of the proposal to replace Seattle's Alaskan Way Viaduct with a tunnel have until July 20 to collect 18,000 signatures on an initiative to the city council for a possible public vote.
Initiative 99 would prohibit the use of public property for a tunnel. The measure was filed by Elizabeth Campbell who opposes the $4.2 billion tunnel and thinks the viaduct should be replaced with a bridge.
The Washington Roundtable of business executives supports the tunnel option selected by Gov. Chris Gregoire. But the president, Steve Mullin, says the project is tenuous. It also faces the opposition of some state lawmakers, the Legislature would have to allow King County to pass a motor vehicle tax, and a funding gap may require the use of tolls.
