Academy for at-risk kids set to open in Bremerton

A military-style school program for at-risk teenagers is set to open Sunday in Bremerton.

BREMERTON, Wash. —

A military-style school program for at-risk teenagers is set to open Sunday in Bremerton.

The Washington Youth Academy has 121 students ready to attend. It's sponsored by federal, state and local agencies, including the Washington National Guard and the Bremerton School District, for 16- to 19-year-olds dropouts and those at risk of quitting school.

It's the 33rd program nationwide associated with the 15-year-old National Guard Youth Challenge program. The complex includes a new $5 million dormitory and administrative building, as well as refurbished modular classrooms and an armory building

The program is designed to make studying the only option for troubled young people. The rules include no iPods, no cell phones, no cruising the Internet and no lounging for hours watching television or playing video games.
