OLYMPIA — The number of state employees dropped by 186 in December, the last month of the hiring freeze ordered by Gov. Chris Gregoire.

The Olympian newspaper reports the state had 65,548 employees at the end of last month.

Agencies can now fill vacancies, within budget limits. Gregoire's proposed budget would cut 950 more positions.

Some agencies have been hiring. The Department of Corrections is hiring prison staff. The Employment Security Department has hired people to handle the increase in applications for jobless benefits.
