Sound Transit light rail is getting $813 million in federal money to extend its light rail line from downtown Seattle to the University of Washington campus.
Sound Transit light rail is getting $813 million in federal money to extend its light rail line from downtown Seattle to the University of Washington campus.
Federal transportation officials signed the funding agreement today in Seattle.
The three-mile project, called University Link, is expected to open by April 2017. It's expected to carry 40,200 riders a day by 2030.
The line will be entirely underground with tunnels from downtown Seattle to an underground station at Capitol Hill and north to the UW campus.
Sound Transit plans to open its light rail line between Seattle and Tukwila in July with an extension to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport by the end of the year.
Plans call for the line to eventually run to Redmond, Lynnwood and Federal Way.
