UW tops list for Peace Corps

No doubt about it: Washington state is a massive engine when it comes to producing Peace Corps volunteers.

No doubt about it: Washington state is a massive engine when it comes to producing Peace Corps volunteers.

For the third year running, the University of Washington produced more alumni volunteers — 104 — than any other college in the nation.

The UW edged out the University of Colorado, Boulder (102 volunteers) and Michigan State University (89) during 2008.

Meanwhile, Western Washington University ranked sixth among medium-sized colleges for producing volunteers and the University of Puget Sound ranked third among small colleges, according to figures released Monday by the Peace Corps. Also making the list of small colleges was Gonzaga University, ranked sixth, and Whitman College, ranked 20th.

Total applications to serve in the Peace Corps increased 16 percent in 2008, the Peace Corps reported, the largest boost in five years. Currently, 7,900 Peace Corps volunteers serve in 76 countries.
