Refurbished USS Stennis leaves Bremerton Tuesday

The USS Stennis leaves Puget Sound Tuesday for a deployment to the western Pacific.

BREMERTON, Wash. —

The USS Stennis leaves Puget Sound Tuesday for a deployment to the western Pacific.

In 2007 the Bremerton-based carrier spent nearly eight months participating in wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. After returning it underwent a $240 million upgrade.

The Kitsap Sun reports the work included replacing the ship's four propellers, which weigh 30 tons apiece. The Stennis also has a new nonskid surface on the flight deck, upgraded Sea Sparrow defense missiles and 850 new computers.

The carrier and its strike group trained last fall off Southern California.
