Schools closed again, roads icy, flooded

Icy roads and pools of melting snow prompted Spokane schools to close again on Wednesday, giving 29,000 students a second unscheduled day off this week.

SPOKANE, Wash. —

Icy roads and pools of melting snow prompted Spokane schools to close again on Wednesday, giving 29,000 students a second unscheduled day off this week.

Meanwhile, heavy rain caused mudslides that blocked three roads south of Spokane. U.S. Highway 272 just west of Palouse, Highway 26 three miles west of Colfax and Highway 194 near Almota were partially blocked. Highway 27 was reduced to one lane due to snow.

Temperatures in the 40s on Wednesday were rapidly melting a record snowpack in the Spokane area.

The Washington National Guard is sending up to 200 people to the Spokane area to help clear snow off roofs that are in danger of collapsing.
