Washington state employee hiring freeze lifted

OLYMPIA — The hiring freeze ordered five months ago by Gov. Chris Gregoire is over.

OLYMPIA — The hiring freeze ordered five months ago by Gov. Chris Gregoire is over.

The Olympian reports Gregoire has told her agency directors they can fill slots as they come open, so long as they don't exceed budgeted positions.

The hiring freeze reduced the number of people on the state payroll by about 1,400 or 2 percent, by the end of November.

A spokesman for the Department of Personnel, Mike Sellars, says the number of state employees will continue to go down. In her budget proposal, Gregoire cuts another 2,600 positions.

As of mid-December, Washington had a total of 65,734 state employees.
