Winds disrupt ferry service between Port Townsend and Whidbey Island

Ferry service between Port Townsend and Whidbey Island has been shut down because of high winds.

PORT TOWNSEND — Ferry service between Port Townsend and Whidbey Island has been shut down because of high winds.

Washington State Ferries reported winds gusting to 70 miles per hour in the Admiralty Inlet area.

In addition, the route is expected to be out of service for at least a while today. That's because the normal car ferry on the route was scheduled to be out of service for maintenance today and be replaced by a passenger-only ferry.

However, the winds have prevented the ferry service from moving barges into position at the Port Townsend and Keystone ferry terminals. The barges will allow passengers to get on and off the foot ferry.
