Snow falls in Wallingford and Ballard neighborhoods
The snow falling in the Seattle area will turn to rain overnight, probably between 11 p.m. and 2 a.m., according to the National Weather Service.
In all, 1 to 3 inches of snow is expected, but as much as 5 inches could fall in elevations of more than 500 feet. In spots, more was being reported, with a resident of Seattle's Broadview neighborhood saying at least 6 inches had fallen.
Meteorologist Dana Felton said the temperature would rise by 5 or 6 a.m. — the first part of the morning commute — to 35 to 38 degrees. Conditions could be slushy, more than slippery on main roads.
Driving tonight in some areas is a bit slick and treacherous, and some drivers were sliding on the roads, and in spots, even abandoning their cars.
The weather is disrupting some King County Metro Transit bus service.
Metro says its staff is working overnight to prepare the buses for morning commute, but if conditions look bad, passengers should check with the transit agency for information on their routes.
King County road crews have been plowing snow in unincorporated areas since this afternoon.
