2 conservation groups to sue over Whopper logging plan

The ink was hardly dry on the Bush administration's plan nearly to double the timber harvest on a patchwork of federal lands in Western Oregon when two conservation groups filed notice they will sue.

GRANTS PASS, Ore. — The ink was hardly dry on the Bush administration's plan nearly to double the timber harvest on a patchwork of federal lands in Western Oregon when two conservation groups filed notice they will sue.

The Western Oregon Plan Revision, known as The Whopper, was signed Wednesday by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management in Portland.

Forest Service Employees for Environmental Ethics and the Earthjustice public-interest law firm fired off the 60-day notices required before suing the government.

They say the agency failed to consult federal biologists over harm the logging may cause spotted owls and other fish and wildlife protected by the Endangered Species Act.

Michael Campbell of the bureau says the plan complies with all applicable laws.
