Abandon vehicle on I-5, expect it to be towed
Motorists who abandon their vehicles because of icy conditions in the "mandatory tow zone" on I-5 from north of Marysville to Olympia likely will have it towed. Here are some tips what to do.
Motorists on Interstate 5 should know that if they abandon their vehicle due to icy conditions, their vehicle likely will be towed. The freeway is a "mandatory tow zone" from Smokey Point, north of Marysville, to Olympia, said Washington State Patrol Trooper Keith Leary.
"Leaving your car creates a hazard and causes problems for the snowplows," he said.
If it's unavoidable, he suggests calling 911 — which gets routed to the WSP — and staying inside the car.
"We also don't want people walking on the freeway," Leary said.
Additionally, Pemco Insurance recommends the following tips for drivers who feel they must abandon their vehicle:
• Try to get as far off the traveled roadway as you safely can.
• Turn on your flashers, and leave them on. A dead battery is better than causing an accident for which you could be held responsible.
• Set out flares to warn other drivers, if you can safely do so.
• Make a reasoned judgment about whether to remain with the vehicle and call for help, or to strike out on your own.
• Leave a note in the window with your contact information. That improves your chance of hearing from someone who hits your vehicle, or from the authorities.
• Take your most-valuable items with you.
