The two-year budget that Gov. Chris Gregoire will propose to the Legislature is expected to have a number of spending cuts to address a revenue shortfall of more than $5 billion.
The two-year budget that Gov. Chris Gregoire will propose to the Legislature is expected to have a number of spending cuts to address a revenue shortfall of more than $5 billion.
She'll also propose a supplemental budget Thursday to adjust the current budget that ends in June.
The hiring freeze announced in August by the governor has reduced the number of workers in state government by 1,400. The Olympian reports the state employs about 65,700 workers.
As lawmakers start work next month on closing the budget gap, Senate Majority Leader Lisa Brown of Spokane says closing tax loopholes could be an option.
The Olympian reports there are 567 tax breaks worth tens of billions of dollars. Most are exemptions to sales and use taxes.
