Sound Transit said Tuesday it will save $10 million on some early work on the future University Link tunnel.

Condon Johnson & Associates was the low bidder at $19.4 million, on a contract to reinforce and cut the underground foundations of Interstate 5 in downtown Seattle, so a tunnel can be bored beneath the freeway there.

Its bid — one of six — was 34 percent below the agency's estimate of $29.6 million, perhaps reflecting an easing of megaproject costs, which have spiked in the past few years.

The three-mile, $1.9 billion tunnel is to open in 2016, from Capitol Hill to Husky Stadium, serving one of the state's most densely populated corridors.

Voters last month approved an additional 34 miles of track construction by 2023.
