Kevin Steele has a fish tale to tell - and federal prosecutors are making him tell it.
The 47-year-old Bellevue man admitted in court Friday that he bought more than 65 tons of flatfish called turbot (TUR' bet) from China and re-labeled it as halibut. Through his business, Mallard Cove Resources, he sold it to stores and restaurants in Texas and Utah at the higher prices halibut fetches.
As part of his plea agreement, Steele agreed to take out quarter-page ads in seafood industry magazines, write about what he did and apologize for it.
He also must donate to the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation the profit he made by selling the turbot at higher halibut prices. The amount of the charity payment will be determined when he is sentenced in February, and the money will go toward species and habitat conservation, protection or restoration.
