Bergeson gives last state of education speech

Terry Bergeson asks state education leaders to continue her efforts as she leaves her job as superintendent of public instruction.

SPOKANE, Wash. —

Terry Bergeson asks state education leaders to continue her efforts as she leaves her job as superintendent of public instruction.

Her last "state of education speech" comes after 12 years as head of Washington's education department and 45 years working in the field. She gave the speech on Friday morning in Spokane at the State School Directors' Association annual conference.

Bergeson congratulated Randy Dorn, who was elected to take her place as superintendent of public instruction. But spoke out against his plans to get rid of the Washington Assessment of Student Learning. She says state officials should mend the WASL, not end it.

Bergeson says the two biggest issues the state's education system faces in the years ahead are a lack of money and the punitive side of federal education laws.
